ASSOCIATED PRESS - NOVEMBER 11, 1997 Guatemala – A sinkhole in Guatemala has
claimed another victim. Craig McMurtry, former Atlanta Braves starting pitcher,
fell into a giant sinkhole. He is in stable condition and expected to fully
recover from his injuries.
Mr. McMurtry apparently fell in while riding a bike to
Rafael Ramirez’s house to practice songs with their mariachi band. Rafael and Craig formed a deep friendship after playing
for the Braves in 1983 and bought small condos down the street from each other in
Guatemala to work on their music. They frequently ride bikes to each other’s houses and play baseball, mariachi music and eat Mexican food.
Craig McMurtry was wearing his Braves uniform when the bike accident occurred.
